For your consideration is a splendid, circa late-18th to early 19th century oil on canvas painting of an interior scene with a mother, daughter and son. Painting, which is fresh to the market from a prestigious Falls Church, Virginia estate, measures 15 x 17 inches. Canvas has been laid down on backing board. The backing board retains an old, circa early 20th century sticker from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Department of Paintings. Hence it is likely that this painting was once owned, and at some point deaccessioned, from the Metropolitan's painting collection. There is some flaking and specs of paint loss, wear along the sides where it was once in a frame and darkening throughout. I do believe it would clean up well, should buyer wish to invest in restoration. Judging from the material, subject and clothing of the subjects, I believe it to be of late 18th to mid- 19th century vintage. The clothing is Colonial in nature and appears to pre-date the neo-Classicism of the late 18th century. However, old styles lingered in the regional parts of the US for several decades, especially in parts of Pennsylvania, so the early to mid-19th century can not be ruled out. A charming example of early American folk art. Shipping $22 in US.
