Original oblong folio photograph album of Ernst Eisenmann, leading administrator of the Dutch owned East Asiatic Trading Company, who went to China for the opening of the Canton office. Comprises 41 sepia photographs, mounted onto 38 thick gilt-edged leaves. Some with manuscript captions, photographs vary in sizes, one which is a large panoramic view measures approximately 80cm x 20cm, the smallest measures 10cm x 7cm, and the largest 23cm x 22cm. Very large volume, measuring approximately 49cm x 33cm, green leather boards, gilt tooled and titled to front, with 4 raised bands, and original dramatic green marbled endpapers. Some scuffing to boards, one corner of panoramic view is split from a crease, otherwise in Very Good Condition. Please note that this item weights 10 pounds and is quite large, therefore, the higher international shipping will apply. The East Asiatic Company was founded in 1897 in Copenhagen by Hans Niels Andersen. The East Asiatic Trading Company was its subsidiary, with the Canton office opening in January 1900. A most ambitious and accomplished Danish sea captain and businessman, Anderson further opened offices in England, Russia, France, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, in short order. This album forms a singular record of the East Asiatic Trading Company's expansion into Canton (Guangzhou), China in January 1900. Assembled by Ernst Eisenmann, executive for the Danish firm, who is seen in several photographs, the album is particularly generous for its large format photographs, facilitating ease in recognition of key figures, while rendering stellar, detailed images. A German Consul is photographed with Li-hung Chang (Li Hongzhang), leading statesman of the late Qing Empire , accompanied by three of his men, engaged in negotiations in the dining room of the East Asiatic Company's stately edifice, in February 1900. Interestingly, it is said that the last picture ever made of the Viceroy Li Hongzhang was taken with Louis Livingston Seaman on 22 February 1900, in his private chamber at his palace in Peking, however he is seen in this photograph, dated the same month. As the demand for importation of Chinese commodities increased across Europe, expansion became critical and most lucrative. One can see from this collection of photographs that no expense was spared when entertaining government officials in hopes of hospitable trade agreements. Competitors were entertained in equally grand style, as was the tradition in the era of gentlemen. Four men from Arnhold, Karberg & Co. are seen on the veranda of the building; the adjacent photograph shows the same four seated in the dining room, The new corporate headquarters in Canton is featured in the first few images, followed by a portrait of the staff, several important visitors, and a large table prepared for a formal dinner event.
