1900 Operative Gynecology Kelly Vol II by D. Appleton Illus Max BrödelThis is a 560 page, 7 1/2” x 10 1/2”, hardcover book titled Operative Gynecology Volume II. The book was written by Howard A. Kelly, A.B., M.D., Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics in The John Hopkins University and Gynecologist and Obstetrician in the John Hopkins Hospital. The book includes medical illustrations by Max Brödel. The book was copyrighted by D. Appleton and Company in 1898 and published by D. Appleton in 1900.In the preface which is stated in volume I the author states that his aim in writing the book is to present to his associates a summary of the various gynecological operations that he found best in his own practice. He states that because gynecology was so young a science and as many surgical procedures were as yet incompletely developed the best service a gynecologist could render his specialty was to record accurately his own experiences. He states that during the years this book was in preparation rapid changes in the field of gynecology including an increase in the number of operative procedures made it necessary to rewrite some chapters two to three times.Chapter titles are – General Principles and Complications Common to Abdominal Operations ; Care of Wound and Patient Up to Recovery ; Complications Arising After Abdominal Operations ; Tuberculous Peritonitis ; Suspension of the Uterus ; Conservative Operations on the Uterine Tubes and Ovaries ; Simple Salpingo-Oophorectomy and Salpino-Oophorectomy for Adherent Tubes and Ovaries ; Vaginal Drainage and Enucleation for Pyosalpinx, Ovarian Abscess, Tubo-ovarian Abscess, and Pelvic Abscess ; Hysterectomy, with Extirpation of Ovaries and Tubes—Abdominal Hyster-Salpino-Oophorectomy ; Ovariotomy ; Abdominal Hysterectomy for Carcinoma and Sarcoma of the Uterus ; Myomectomy—Hystero-Myomectomy ; Operations During Pregnancy ; Cesarean Section ; Extra-Uterine Pregnancy ; The Radical Cure of Hernia ; Intestinal Complications ; The More Remote Results of Abdominal Operations ; On the Conduct of Autopsies, the Making of Protocols, and the Preservation of Tissues for Microscopic Examination in Gynecological Practice.Condition – This volume includes twenty-four plates and 590 original illustrations a few of which are fully or partly in color. The book is clean and complete. The cover binding is square and both cover and pages are tightly bound. The dark green cover cloth with gold spine edge print is not only unfaded but still retains its original shine. Cover cloth wear consists of a few minor scuffs and lightly bumped corners. There are previous owners names written on the inside of the front cover and at the top corner of the otherwise adjacent front end page. One of these names is also written in ink at the top of the title page. On the lower portion of this front end page there is also an embossed seal type stamp indicating this book was once part of a physicians personal book collection. There are no other markings in the book. There are no torn, missing, loose or creased . Not considering the previous owner names and markings as described above, the book is in at least very good+ condition and will make a valued addition, suitable for the top shelf of a collection of vintage specialized medical or surgical books.
