RARE 1900's Pin WILLIAM S. DEVERY - Yankees NEW YORK HIGHLANDERS Starting Bid 99 cents !!! .... Absolutely NO RESERVE !!! DESCRIPTION GENESIS .... Birth of the Yankees Franchise ! A Very RARE 1900's pinback of William S. Devery, the 1st owner of the New York Yankees, then the New York Highlanders). The wealthy (and reportedly corrupt) figurehead was the last superintendent of the New York City Police Department police commission and the first police chief in 1898 with political ties to the infamous Tammany Hall machine that ruled New York City. In 1902, Devery teamed with Frank Farrell and bought the Maryland based baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles and moved them to New York City and his new $300,000 ball field, Hilltop Park. Because of the elevation of the ball field, the new team in the newly formed, American League would be called the New York Highlanders (until 1913 when the team was renamed by Devery officially as the New York Yankees). In 1915, Devery and Farrell sold the team and Hilltop Park to Colonel Jacob Ruppert, Jr. and Tillinghast L' Hommedieu Huston. The rest as they say, is history ! This RARE pinback measuring approx. 1" dates to the 1900's during Devery' short-lived campaign for the position of New York City Mayor.
