Annual it's HOT in Topeka Sale! Early 1900's Etched Beer Glass Here is a great piece of Americana. This etched beer glass comes from the Willow Springs Brewing Co. Omaha Neb. U.S.A. and has the lyrics to " My Country 'Tis of Thee " below the logo. The glass stands 3 1/2" tall and 2 1/2" across the top. This little glass has A TON of history behing it: The Willow Springs Brewing Co began making Stars and Stripes Special Brew around 1903. Nebraska statutes prohibited use of the flag in advertising and the WSBC was charged with "desecration of the flag." A court case ensued and when the WSBC lost they appealed to the US Supreme Court. In 1907 (Halter v. Nebraska 205 U.S. 34) the Supreme Court determined that a Nebraska law forbidding the use of the flag for advertising merchandise didn't violate the Constitution. The court, however, considered the case only on property rights and not in regard to the First Amendment. The WSBC lost the appeal and was fined $50! According to some information that I "googled" the company eventually was closed after a prohibition era mistake: "During Prohibition it was popular to homebrew beer, and was not frowned upon by Omaha authorities when it was for home consumption.
