Very interesting 1 p. letter on printed 26 Broadway, New York printed stationery secretarial written, signed by William G. Rockefeller, to Chancy M. Depew, Grand Central Depot, New York, with original stamped and postmarked cover. The content reads, in part, as follows, "I wish to express my sincere thanks for the pass over the lines of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad Company for the year 1903 which I have just received ..." William G. Rockefeller entered business life as a bookkeeper in a milling firm for a few years in Cleveland, Ohio, his home town, then joined a commission merchant, w he soon became a partner. Leaving after three years with Hughes & Rockefeller, he joined his brother, John D., in the fledgling oil business. William Rockefeller was President of the Standard Oil Trust from 1881 until its breakup by court order in 1892. Was also President of Standard Oil Co. of N.J. in New York from 1865-1911. This letter was written in that capacity. Chauncey Depew was was an important capitalist, as well, being Chairman of the New York Central Railroad, as well as a director of numerous other railway, banking and other corporations.
