I'm pleased to offer this FRAMED ANTIQUE Gordon H. Grant ORIGINAL ARTWORK. It measures 21" tall X 14-1/4" wide, in its period WOOD FRAME. The drawing itself measures 20" tall X 13" wide. Rendered on sandwich mounted textured ART PAPER is the profile image of a beautiful VICTORIAN LADY. Her wealth and position are evidenced by her well coiffed hairstyle, make-up and clothing. A 1904 WATERMARK on the upper right corner corresponds with the Artist's signature & date that reads: "Gordon H Grant / 04" (see images). Listed Artist GORDON HOPE GRANT (1875-1962) is mostly known for his maritime drawings and paintings. Having studied art in London however, he worked as an on-the-spot newspaper "sketch artist" in San Francisco and New York. From 1901 until 1909 he was employed as an illustrator for the politically irreverent "Puck Magazine". This Artist signed ORIGINAL is from that early period in his career. The stately female subject is perhaps a character compilation from his periodical illustrations and/or is likely someone personally known by the Artist. The detail and quality of this Artwork is typical "Gordon Grant" however, the portrait subject here is quite unique with her black-on-white pencil sketched image made "life-like" by a skilled watercolor brush (see images).
