APPLETON AND COMPANY, NEW YORK, IN 1902 This excellent-condition, highly-collectible, book is a vibrant collection of African American folklore. For more than a hundred years, the tales of Joel Chandler Harris have entertained and influenced both readers and writers. Nights with Uncle Remus gathers twenty-one of Harris's most popular narratives, featuring African American trickster tales, etiological myths, Sea Island legends, and chilling ghost stories. Told through the distinct voices of four slave storytellers, indispensable tales like "The Wonderful Tar-Baby Story, Mr. Fox is “outdone” by Mr. Buzzard, A Plantation Witch, Why the Negro is Black, and other Brer Rabbit stories have inspired writers from Mark Twain to William Faulkner, Zora Neale Hurston to Toni Morrison, and helped revolutionize modern children's literature and folktale collecting. Uncle Remus, the title character and fictional narrator of these stories, is a kindly old slave who serves as a storyteller passing on the folktales to the white children gatd around him. These tales were created out of sorrow but the hearts and mind of the black people who formed them and passed them on to us were full of love and hope. Harris’ stories have moral messages and the genre is the “trickster tale.” Trickster Tales are short narratives that use animal characters with human behaviors to convey folk wisdom to help us understand human nature and behavior. These stories were originally passed down by African slaves through oral tradition and eventually developed into the Brer Rabbit stories. Harris was praised for his ability to capture plantation negro dialect as well. Joel Chandler Harris Joel Chandler Harris was an accomplished and well-known writer in his time. He was known for his journalism skills, but most of all for his stories narrated by the character, Uncle Remus. Born in Eatonton, Georgia, he was raised by his single mother. He became a printer’s devil for the Countryman , a local newspaper owned by Joseph Addison Turner. Turner owned the Turnwold Plantation , which Harris later moved to. It was , at Turnwold, that Harris was first introduced the Negro slaves. He spent many hours with the slaves listening to their folklore. He had an ear for their dialect and committed to memory both their stories and language. It would later prove to be an asset to his career. In the stories of Uncle Remus, Harris was able to capture the reader and listener’s attention by his accurate detail of the Negro folklore of the plantation slave. Although other writers had also imitated the language, they were unable to capture it the way Harris did. Turner’s business collapsed in 1866 with the end of the American Civil War and Harris left Turnwold . Harris’ stories focus on the issues of slavery and white supremacy in the time of post American Civil War as well. A timeless, classic and highly collectible work by the noted author. THIS BOOK IS IN VERY GOOD + CONDITION This handsomely decorated, antique and collectible book is bound in red-colored cloth with gold-gilded lettering on the cover and spine and the image of two buckets on ropes. The book is in very good + condition. The book has an attractive frontispiece, content, List of Illustrations and Introduction. The interior is clean, with no writing, underlining, or foxing or other markings in it except that the first few pages are watermark stained, but not affecting the text. T is a handsome, period prior owner name and "Christmas 1906" written on the front inside blank page. The cover is solid and clean, but does have a watermark on the lower, left corner and spine.
