A HAND-LIST OF THE BIRDS OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS by Richard McGregor & Dean Worcester , published by the Department of the Interior at the Bureau of Printing , Manila , Philippine Islands. , 1906 , ( appears especially scarce , searching the internet I find only one other copy mentioned as available, unbound and selling at $125.09. Volume has been made available again lately as a useful Philippines and Asian Natural History resource in several print-on-demand versions, including by the Kessinger Press, the Nabu Press, Pranava Press, and others, this copy is the genuine antique and collectible original, not a reprint), Volume begins with an Introduction by author Worcester, dated ‘Manila, P.I., September 9, 1905’ , states, in part, “The appearance of the first volume of Dr. R.B. Sharpe’s admirable Hand-List of Birds , suggested to be the desirability of preparing a list, similar in form, of the birds of the Philippine Islands. The need of such … was especially great in view of the fact that among the Americans scattered through every province of the Philippine Archipelago there were a number of members of the American Ornithological Union … [taking] up the study of Philippine birds, as well as numerous amateur ornithologists, whose attention was attracted by the unusual opportunities for ornithological work who desired to identify the birds to be found in the vicinity of the various stations …”, going on to discuss previous studies of the subject as-well-as the studies made during collecting trips made by the authors, stating that … “I myself have been able to carry on in connection with official trips through the Islands … [Where] some knowledge has been gained of the avifauna of the Islands of Ticao, Lubang, Cagayancillo, Agutaya, Cresta de Gallo, Maestro de Campo, Semirara, East Balud, West Balud, and Sibay” , going on to discuss the islands of the Philippines as requiring to be placed in distinct groups from a zoological standpoint, the groups being the Palawan Group (Balabac, Cagayan Sulu), The Central Philippines Group (Negros, Panay, Guimaras, Masbate, Ticao), Mindoro , the Luzon, Catanduances, Marinduque and Lubang Group , the Samara, Leyte and Bohol Group , the Mindanao Group , Basilan , the Bongao, Tawi Tawi, Lapac, Sisai and Sulu Group , Cebu , the Batanges Islands Group “[having] a strong Formosan element”, and the Siquijor, Cagayancillo and Cresta de Gallo Group “islands of recent origin”, Volume then opens, containing 104 pages listing of the birds covered, each listing entry giving all of its classifications, date of sighting, the names of the Philippine Islands where the bird is found, as well as the names of other Far Eastern, Southeast Asian, Indian Continent, Asia Pacific and other locations, (including China, Indonesia, Java, Celebes, Borneo, Korea, Mongolia, Eastern Siberia, Formosa [Taiwan], Indo-China, Malay Peninsula, Burma, Siam, Marianna Islands, Nicobars, Andamans, the Moluccas, and so on), where known to exist, for example “Muscicapula luzoniensis, Calayan, Luzon, Mindoro …”, Muscicapula samarensis , Bourne & Worcester, Samar …”, “Podicipes philippinensis , Calayan Guimaras, Luzon, Mindanao, [and also] Borneo, Southern China, Burmese Provinces, Formosa, Hainan”,… “Gallicrex cinera , Cebu … Negros … Panay … Sulu … [and also] Burmese Provinces to China … Malay Peninsula … Greater Sunda Islands”, and so on.
