1908-S $20 MS66 NGC. CAC. Only 22,000 double eagles were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1908, a minuscule production figure for any 20th century coin. Among Saint-Gaudens double eagles, only the famous 1907 High Reliefs and Ultra High Reliefs can claim smaller mintages. As the second year of the celebrated series, the 1908-S missed the heated debate over the inclusion of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and all examples struck are of the Motto type. Prior to World War I double eagles still circulated to some degree in the western part of the country, and the 1908-S is one of the few series issues that is seen more often in circulated grades than Mint State. The issue is elusive in lower Uncirculated grades, and examples in Premium Gem condition are very rare. In high grade, the 1908-S is considered by specialists to be just as rare as the more famous later dates of the series, such as the 1932. The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem example, listed in David Akers' compilation of Significant Examples (A Handbook of 20th Century United States Gold Coins 1907-1933, second edition, page 231). The surfaces of this piece are impeccably preserved and satiny, with delicate orange-gold highlights. The design elements exhibit razor-sharp definition throughout, and eye appeal is tremendous.
