Background: Joseph Crosby Lincoln (February 13, 1870 – March 10, 1944) was an American author of novels, poems, and short stories, many set in a fictionalized Cape Cod . Lincoln's work frequently appeared in popular magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post and The Delineator . Lincoln was aware of contemporary naturalist writers, such as Frank Norris and Theodore Dreiser , who used American literature to plumb the depths of human nature, but he rejected this literary exercise. Lincoln claimed that he was satisfied "spinning yarns" that made readers feel good about themselves and their neighbors. Two of his stories have been adapted to film. Lincoln was born in Brewster, Massachusetts , on Cape Cod, but his mother moved the family to Chelsea, Massachusetts , a manufacturing city outside of Boston , after the death of his father. Lincoln's literary career celebrating "old Cape Cod" can partly be seen as an attempt to return to an Eden from which he had been driven by family tragedy. His literary portrayal of Cape Cod can also be understood as a pre-modern haven occupied by individuals of old Yankee stock which was offered to readers as an antidote to an America that was undergoing rapid modernization, urbanization, immigration, and industrialization. Lincoln was a Republican and a Universalist . What Rudyard Kipling is to India, and Robert Service is to the Yukon, Joseph C. Lincoln is to "The Cape." Many of his stories are equal to the best of W.W. Jacobs, and he topped that writer in sales and popularity-- at least in the U.S. His first book was Cape Cod Ballads (1902), and was the only volume of verse he produced. If he had continued in that vein, he might have become one of the great American balladeers. However, his real success was in prose, and came with the publication of Cap'n Eri (1904), a humorous novel about three old sea captains forced to advertise for a wife. This enabled him to quit his job and dedicate himself to full-time writing. Lincoln writes in a simple literary style, and his characters are vivid and true-to-life. Much of his work is genuinely humorous, and still highly readable. Lincoln worked from 9 A.M. till noon, and wrote on sheets of yellow paper with a stubby pencil. Condition: Condition is Good+/Very Good. Small wear to edges, fading of labeling to spine, pages are very good, light blemish to very edge of some pages when closed, blemish in margin on a couple pages near end, few letters to spine touched up, hinges/text block are very good.
