SCOUTS ON THE MARCH"This scarce original photogravure is from the 1913 FIRST EDITION book titled "The Vanishing Race (The Last Great Indian Council)" attributed to Rodman Wanamaker. The execution of these photographs was headed by Dr. Joseph Dixon who led an expedition of photographers into the field to photograph the North American Indian sometime prior to 1913 when these photogravures were published. Probably inspired by the work of Edward Curtis, these exquisite prints were used as the accompaniment to General Custer's Indian Scouts' account of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Each sheet measures approximately 6 3/4" x 9 3/4". This print is in excellent condition. It has a strong plate mark and is dated 1913 at the bottom. A photogravure is a photographic image produced from an engraving plate. The process is rarely used today due to the costs involved, but it produces prints which have the subtlety of a photograph and the art quality of a lithograph. In essence, the production of a photogravure consists of three steps: taking the picture; producing a printing plate of the image; and printing the image on paper. The basic process was developed in the 1850's. The rich sepia ink is the final element in the production of these beautiful prints of the Western North American Indian.
