Denomination – 20 franc Gold Coin Country: France Year: 1914 Mintage: 1899 – 1914 (1899 extremely rare), quantities left - unknown AGW. 1867 troy oz. of pure gold, approximately 1/5th ounce 6.4516 grams Diameter: 21.10 mm Fineness: .900 It is truly a Coin with Historical Meaning and singular beauty for the investor looking past bullion value ! Raised edge lettering LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE ( Liberty , Equality , Brotherhood ) and raised stars The Gallic cock , Coq d'Or "Rooster" , value and date . It is surrounded by the motto of the French Revolution - LIBERTE , EGALITE , FRATERNITE ( Liberty , Equality , Brotherhood ) . The Head of Marianne wearing a Phrygian cap , the same cap worn by the freed slaves of Greek and Rome . The cap has since become a symbol of LIBERTY and of the REPUBLIC. Minted in Paris A large part of these gold coins are reputed to have been melted down and some of them used for subsequent coinage. Who knows how many have survived in this MS condition ?!
