Raised edge lettering LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE ( Liberty , Equality , Brotherhood ) and raised stars The Gallic cock , Coq d'Or "Rooster" , value and date . It is surrounded by the motto of the French Revolution - LIBERTE , EGALITE , FRATERNITE ( Liberty , Equality , Brotherhood ) . The Head of Marianne wearing a Phrygian cap , the same cap worn by the freed slaves of Greek and Rome . The cap has since become a symbol of LIBERTY and of the REPUBLIC.
