Here is a rare collection of real photo postcards and photographs brought back from the Mexican Punitive Expedition by a National Guardsman from the 74th infantry in 1917. In 1916, Mexican military and armed citizens performed several raids of American cities, the most deadly happening in Columbus New Mexico. For the first time in American history, thousands of National Guard troops were activated to patrol the American side of the border to prevent future occurances. The soldier who brought back this collection was based in Pharr, Texas. The conditions there were difficult; not enough drinking water, terrible insect infestation, and shortages of most everything. There was even a terrible storm there that nearly destroyed the camp. These postcards and photographs show nearly every aspect of this operation such as the building of the camp, mail call, military exercises, recreation, the storm damage, imunization day, the funeral of their Col., various guardsmen, the landscape, sites in Pharr, Mexicans, and more. There are many interesting images from this little-remembered chapter of American military history.
