ITEM: YITEM: You are bidding on a rare Lucien Levy Dhurmer fine art pencil signed and numbered World War I art nouveau mezzotint from the rare 1916 folio Mothers During the War ("Les Meres pendant la Guerre.") Mothers During the War is an exceptionally rare folio, the only other information we could find regarding it were examples that were in libraries. This is a beautiful art nouveau, belle epoque symbolist rendering of the private costs of war from the French home front, and it is truly exquisite, the printmaking process is astonishingly detailed and subtle and gives the illusion of this as a pastel work of art. Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer (September 30, 1865 - September 24, 1953 was a French Symbolist/Art Nouveau painter and potter and this was one of the highlights of his career, an art nouveau treasure of an intensely emotional moment between a French young mother and her newborn son born while the father a soldier was engaged in The First World War . This retains its original label on verso of matting and is ready to frame. A remarkable artifact that is beautiful and incredibly detailed and nuanced. Hand signed in pencil lower left and numbered in pencil 232/270 For reference, are some views of the original folio w this incredible 1916 limited edition antique fine art print was found. Sadly this folio was incomplete at the time we came upon it so we will be selling each large colorful, dramatic and emotionally resonant antique mezzotint individually. This is an incredible piece and we are happy to offer it. CONDITION: This is in excellent untouched condition, all original with some minor toning on the outside edges of original mat, original tag as seen, a fantastic state of preservation throughout About the artist: Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer ( September 30 , 1865 - September 24 , 1953 was a French Symbolist /Art Nouveau painter and potter . He was born Lucien Lévy to a Jewish family in Algiers . In 1879 he began studying drawing and sculpture in Paris . In 1887 Lévy began making his living in southern France, overseeing the decoration of ceramics . His own tastes in pottery decoration were influenced by Islamic Art . In 1895 he left for Paris to begin a career in painting; around this time he visited Italy and was further influenced by art of the Renaissance . In 1896 he exhibited his first pastels and paintings under the name Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer; he'd added the last two syllables of his mother's maiden name (Goldhurmer), likely to differentiate himself from other people named Lévy. His paintings soon became popular with the public and among fellow artists as well. He earned high praise for the academic attention to detail with which he captured figures lost in a Pre-Raphaelite haze of melancholy , contrasted with bright Impressionist colouration. His portrait of writer Georges Rodenbach is perhaps the most striking example of this strange and extraordinary synergy. After 1901 Lévy-Dhurmer moved away from expressly Symbolist content, incorporating more landscapes into his work. He continued to draw inspiration from music and attempted to capture works of great composers such as Beethoven in painted form. He died in Le Vésinet in 1953. read more
