VERY RARE SILVERCREST BOOKENDS, CIRCA 1920. IN THE EARLY DECADES OF THE 20TH CENTURY THE CLASSICAL AND TRADITIONAL STYLE OF THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT WERE VERY POPULAR. THEY WERE JOINED BY THE NEWER ART NOUVEAU AND ART DECO STYLES AND MANY OF SILVERCREST BOOKENDS WERE TAILORED TO THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT WITH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DECO OR NOUVEAU STYLE. THIS SET BEING NO EXCEPTION WITH BOTH ELEMENTS OF A&C AND NOUVEAU. A SLEEK AND STYLIZED COCKATIEL WITH ITS LONG FEATHERY TAIL AND ORNAMENTAL CURVED PLUME. A NATIVE BIRD OF AUSTRALIA AND A SPECIES OF THE PARROT. THE SMALLEST BIRD OF THE COCKATOO FAMILY.PET COCKATIELS ARE ONLY BRED DOMESTICALLY BECAUSE AUSTRALIA BANNED EXPORTATION OF ALL NATIVE BIRDS IN 1894. MADE BY THE SMITH METAL ART COMPANY NAMED AFTER FRED SMITH WHO WAS THE CHIEF SALESMAN FOR THE HEINTZ COMPANY. AFTER THE DEATH OF OTTO HEINTZ IN 1919 FRED PURCHASED THE REMAINS OF THE COMPANY AND CONTINUED WITH GREAT SUCCESS. THE UNDERLYING METAL MADE OF BRONZE WITH A STERLING SILVER OVERALL FINISH.
