This 1920's period dress clip features a hand-carved Chinese cinnabar lacquer plaque. The face measures 1 9/16" by 1 3/8". The cinnabar floral plaque is deeply carved to bring out the details of the flowers. Traditional Chinese cinnabar lacquer is made of a mineral (cinnabar ) and the sap of the Lac tree. The lacquer-work can from 200 to 500 coats of lacquer, each applied, dried, and then carved and polished. The plaque here is set in a silver filigree frame with a spring-loaded clip back. The silver back is stamped "China." I believe it is a solid silver base, not plated; the clip is probably plated. You may wear the clip on a pocket, lapel or collar or try it on a chain or ribbon to double the accessorizing options. This exquisite and unusual ornament is in great condition.
