Renner OLD GROSSVATER / Zepp Brew Beer Tray This classic antique tray was manufactured by The Novelty Advertising Co. of Coshocton, Ohio during prohibition for The Renner Products Co. of Akron, Ohio. Prior to prohibition, Renner Products was known as The Geo. J. Renner Brewing Company from (1901-1919) and simply The Renner Brewing Co. (1888-1901). At the end of prohibition, the brewery returned to its pre-pro roots and was renamed The George J. Renner Brewing Co. until closing. Grossvater (German for Grandfather) Beer was introduced in 1912 and later rose in status to become their flagship brew and continued to be made until the brewery closed in 1952. During prohibition (1919-1933) Renner Products Co. was issued Federal L-Permit #32 to produce "near beer" with "alcohol less than 1/2 of 1 percent" and Grossvater Beer became known as Grossvater Special as depicted on the bottle on this tray. In 1924 Renner's Zepp was introduced and was named in honor of the thriving Zeppelin rigid airship manufacturing business which took place at The Goodyear-Zeppelin Co. plant in Akron. Zepp Brew continued to be manufactured even after prohibition and was sold as a non-alcoholic malt beverage until the brewery ceased operations on December 8, 1952.
