See the scans. This is an original issue U.S. Navy Good Conduct Medal. It is officially hand engraved to the recipient, "WILLIAM C. DARNELL, RECEIVING STATION, U.S. NAVY YARD PHILA. PA. AUG. 6, 1921." With three additional award bars. "V.T. SQUADRON TWO A.S.B.F."(which stands for Torpedo Squadron Two, Aircraft Squadrons, Battle Fleet). The reverse is engraved "C.S.C. 68643 11 Aug. 1925." Also "1931" and "1934" with both bars engraved on the reverse "William Charles Darnell."I found a few entries for Darnell on the Ancestry site. In the 1920 Census, he was living at the Navy Yard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, born about 1891 in Illinois, age 29, occupation, "Mariner U.S. Navy." He also shows up in the 1950 Navy & Marine Corps Officer Register as a retired Chief Machinist and in the 1955 edition as a retired Chief Warrant Officer. I assume he was commissioned in WWII.As you can see, this is mounted with the planchet reversed to show the bar and the medal engraving at the same time. As many collectors prefer this, I have not switched it back to the way it was issued, but that is easily done if you want to.The mid-1920's Naval Aviation bar is quite scarce.VF condition.
