Many of these veterans remained inthe state and slowly rebuilt their lives after fourlong years of war. A national organization forConfederate veterans was not established until1889, when some Confederate veterans' groupsmet in New Orleans, Louisiana, and organized theUnited Confederate Veterans (UCV). It was thecounterpart to the Grand Army of the Republic(GAR), a national organization of Union veteransthat had been established in 1866, although theUCV never had the political power or the prestigeof the GAR. However, the UCV did have the powerto directly affect the lives of its members at alocal level.The primary functions of the organization wereto provide for widows and orphans of formerConfederate soldiers, preserve relics andmementos, care for disabled former soldiers,preserve a record of the service of its members,and organize reunions and fraternal gatherings.At its highest point, the UCV had about 160,000members in 1,885 local "camps," as the localgroups were called, across the country.
