1927 Circus Route Book - Gentry Bros. Circus Black lettering on dark red paper. This paperback book measures about 8 1/4 inches tall, 5 1/4 inches wide, and there are 60 un-numbered pages. Condition: Good condition! There is some minor edge wear, rubbing on the spine, and the front cover has about 7 pinholes, and a few go several pages deep . The first loose page has a small stamp of the previous owner "Bruce R. Royal Collection" in green ink. The last loose page has a few numbers on it, written in pencil. Clean and tight inside, with no odors. Lots of photos throughout of all the various circus staff, and many full-page photos of elephants, bands, tents, etc. There is also a two-page article about Karl Kae Knecht, the Secretary-Treasurer of the Circus Fans Association. Four Gentry brothers from Bloomington, IN, started several animal acts in 1885. The show transitioned from theatre format to a circus format in 1891, and developed one of the best dog and pony shows in the United States. Elephants were added in 1900, and in 1902 twenty baby elephants were purchased as well as two steam calliopes. By 1910 the Gentry Bros. Circus was the largest traveling show. It was sold in 1916. The circus operated as the Gentry-Patterson Circus from 1923 through 1925 when it was purchased by James Patterson. Henry and Floyd King took over and read more
