The story of Apollo's wreath is in itself a true Greek tragedy, and one of the most beloved, passed down through Greco-Roman mythology. After Apollo mocked Cupid and his bow, Cupid shot two arrows simultaneously - one at Apollo and one at Daphne, daughter of the river god Peneus. The arrow that struck Apollo caused him to lust after Daphne, but the arrow she was struck with caused her to be repulsed by the young sun god. One day, Apollo chased Daphne through a forest as she called to her father for help. When Peneus heard Dapne's cries he answered her by turning her into a laurel tree so Apollo could never have her. As Apollo watched Daphne transform in front of him he snapped one of the newly formed branches and proceeded to fashion a wreath of laurel leaves and berries and placed it atop his head. This beautiful door knocker seems to exude the pain and love from the sun god's sad eyes. It is an ideally sized door knocker that shows very well with a striker that was made to look like heavy fabric drapes. Construction is solid brass. The door knocker is not new. It is a salvaged item and has lovely patina from age and use. Overall read more
