These are some of my favorite Ronson bookends. They are the oriental scholars or the asian children, as they are called. They are large, measuring 9 inches tall for the standing mandarin boy with the queue or pigtail, and 6 inches tall for the sitting chinese girl student. They weigh over 10 pounds. They are guaranteed old, genuine and original. They were made by Ronson between 1925 and 1935 and you can find them pictured and identified in both Schneider's "Ronson Art Metal Works" and Kuritzky's "Encyclopedia of Bookends" antique bookend guides. These are made of pot metal and they have that wonderful Ronson polychrome finish> The children sit on books while one reads a book, a nice conceit. The bases are verdigris bronze and the children are colorful. Gilded bronze faces and hands and sleeves and trousers. The boy has a blood red chinese cap and a nice deep royal purple tunic. The girl has a scarlet tunic, white slippers and turqoise trim on her golden pants. The only paint loss is on the white pages of the books. In very nice condition indeed and a rare set. This set, with the polychrome finish, in the larger size, is the hardest to find and most valuable bookend set. Thanks for looking and please see my other auctions for more antique and vintage cast metal bookends and doorstops that I will combine on shipping whenever possible.
