PRESENTING A Vintage Very Rare 1933 CENTURY of PROGRESS Chicago (WELTAUSSTELLING) World's Fair Zeppelin Tag Century of Progress History A Century of Progress was organized as an Illinois not-for-profit corporation in January, 1928 for the purpose of planning and hosting a World's Fair in Chicago in 1934. The site selected was the land and water areas under the jurisdiction of South Park commissioners lying along and adjacent to the shore of Lake Michigan, between 12th and 39th streets. Held on a 427 acre (1.7 km²) plot of land in Burnham ParkBurnham Park (Chicago)]] One of the highlights of the 1933 World's Fair was the arrival of the German airship Graf Zeppelin LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin was a large German passenger carrying rigid airship which operated commercially from 1928 to 1937. It was named after the Germany pioneer of airships, Ferdinand von Zeppelin, who held the rank of Graf or Count in the German nobility....Dr. Hugo Eckener was the head of the Luftschiffbau Zeppelin in the inter-war years, and was commander of the famous LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin on most of its record setting flights, including the first airship flight to the Arctic and the first airship flight around the world, making him by far the most successful airship commander in histor... landed the 776-foot airship at the nearby Curtis-Wright Airport in Glenview. It remained on the ground for twenty-five minutes (from 1 to 1:25 p.m.) then took off ahead of an approaching weather front bound for Akron, Ohio. For some Chicagoans, however, the appearance of the Graf Zeppelin and its Nazi Symbol, the swastika, over their fair city was not a welcome sight, as the airship had become a prominent reminder of the ascendancy of Adolf Hitler.Adolf Hitler was an Austrian-born Germany politician and the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party , popularly known as the Nazi Party.... to power earlier that same year. This triggered dissension in the days following its visit, particularly within the city's large German-American population. The Graf Zeppelin undertook a number of trips around Europe , and following a successful tour to South America in May 1930, it was decided to open the first regular transatlantic airship line, traveling mainly from Germany to Brazil (64 such round trips overall) with occasional stops, among them Spain, Miami, [18 ] London, [19 ] and Berlin. [20 ] At one of the Berlin visits a glider that was released from under its hull performed a loop in front of cheering crowds, [21 ] and on one of the Brazil trips British Pathé News filmed on board. [22 ].Almost every flight had a reporter on board, who would radio a report to the ground via Morse Code. Such articles made Lady Drummond-Hay famous, and she would be pictured in advertisements featuring the Graf. [23 ] In October 1933, the Graf Zeppelin made an appearance at the Century of Progress World’s Fair in Chicago, after circling over the fair, [24 ] then landing and relaunching 25 minutes later . Despite the beginning of the Great Depression and growing competition by fixed-wing aircraft, D-LZ127 would transport an increasing number of passengers and mail across the ocean every year until 1937. Post and cargo provided most of the income for operating the Graf. In one transatlantic flight the Graf would carry 52,000 postcards and 50,000 letters, and by its last flight it had carried 53 tonnes of mail. Since 1912 Zeppelins were allowed to postmark and sort mail onboard and the Graf managed to deliver South America-bound about a week faster than by ship.
