Black Man's Verse by Frank Marshall Davis. Published in 1935 in Chicago by The Black Cat Press. According to the Introduction, "This book has been undertaken in a chance effort to eradicate the writer's bewilderment. I want to know whether to believe certain magazine editors who, in form letters, have thanked me "for the opportunity of looking over this material but regret it is unsuitable to our needs at the present time," or accept the enthusiastic praise of other editors and critics who have done some plain and fancy raving over much of the stuff presented within these covers. Obviously somebody's wrong." Highly collectible 83 page collection of verse written by a prominent African American journalist and civil rights activist. His career and life were spent in Chicago, Atlanta, and Hawaii. Handsomely bound in black cloth with heavy paper with deckled edges. 10" long, 6 1/2" deep, 1/2" wide. Black cloth covered binding still deep black with a little rubbing on edges. Silver silhouette of black man on cover has a little wearing off of the silver. Some markings as former library book, a little sticky on spine, back end paper marked from former stickers, property stamps marked out. Inside cover bottom 1" separated from binding. Other than that binding is tight.
