Here is a very high grade example of the scarce Series of 1935-A $1 Silver Certificate, Experimental issue with red overprint "S." This is part of the famous "R" and "S" experimental overprint notes. Approximately 1 million notes of the S-C block of Series 1935-A overprinted with red R or S were placed into circulation. The intention was to test the wear of the paper. The "R" notes were printed on the regular distinctive paper and the "S" notes on a special paper. They were delivered on June 20, 1944 and issued into circulation to test their relative durabilities. The intention was to examine the notes when they were returned worn out. However, no conclusive results were determined and the currency paper was not changed. Only 1,184,000 of each type overprint were issued. All were released into circulation and few were saved. They are very desirable today and quite hard to find in any conditon. Serial # S74107399 C.
