1940 1C MS68 Red PCGS. Philadelphia struck over half a billion (and closer to 600 million) cents in 1940, a record to that time. The chief reason for that mass mintage was a sudden demand for small coins brought on by changes in taxation that came into effect on July 1 of that year, as alluded to by David Lange in his Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents; more specifically, a tax on gasoline, one-half cent per gallon, began on that date. This precious survivor, however, was never spent, and its gorgeous peach and orange surfaces are borderline flawless to the unaided eye. Razor-sharp detail and dramatic luster enhance the eye appeal. Population: 4 in 68 Red, 0 finer (4/11).Ex: Jack Lee Estate Lincoln Cent Registry Set (Heritage, 12/2008), lot 229, which realized $8,050. Grade: 68, Service: PCGS, Service No.: 2686, Issue Date: 1940, Denomination: 1C
