It contains all 14 segments of an interview done in the Bahamas with noted writer and newspaper columnist Adela Rogers St. Johns. The previous owner meticulously pieced together this fascinating scrapbook containing the complete series of articles, photos and clippings that were originally published in the Baltimore paper in November of 1940. There are 58 pages in this scrapbook including several additional final clippings of the couple's trip to Miami in 1940 for Simpson to have Oral Surgery done for a severe tooth abscess.The book is in wonderful condition for being 80 years old. The articles themselves have 'tanned' over time as old newspaper stock tends to do, but they are very clean and easily readable. The person who put this scrapbook together did a very nice, neat and artistic job.I tried to show some of the neatly done pages in the photos. The maker also gave the book a nice title on the cover.A fascinating look at the couple and their exiled life in the Bahamas. The Abdication story from their own point of view in their own words.A very interesting piece of British Royal Family history and a fascinating look into one of the most famous love stories to ever happen in modern times.~~~THE STORY OF THE ABDICATION AND SUBSEQUENT MARRIAGEAfter ruling for less than one year, Edward VIII became the first English monarch to voluntarily abdicate the throne. He chose to abdicate after the British government, public, and the Church of England condemned his decision to marry the American divorcée Wallis Warfield Simpson.Edward was the eldest son of King George V, who became the British sovereign in 1910.Still unmarried as he approached his 40th birthday, he socialized with the fashionable London society of the day. By 1934, he had fallen deeply in love with American socialite Wallis Warfield Simpson, who was married to a businessman in London.The royal family disapproved of Edward's married mistress, but by 1936 the prince was intent on marrying Mrs. Simpson.Edward's father, George V suddenly died, in January 1936, and Edward was proclaimed king. The new king proved popular with his subjects, and his coronation was scheduled for May 1937. His affair with Mrs. Simpson was reported in overseas newspapers, but the affair was kept out of British newspapers.The Prime Minister and other leaders of England, especially the Church, argued that a divorced American woman with two living ex-husbands was politically and socially unacceptable as a prospective British Queen.Despite the seemingly united front against him, Edward could not be dissuaded. He was going to marry Simpson. On December 10 th , 1936 he told Parliament his plans to abdicate the thrown. The next day, Parliament approved the abdication instrument, and Edward VIII's reign came to an end. The formal paperwork specifically stated that "his wife and descendants, if any, shall not hold said title or attribute".On the night of 11 December 1936, Edward explained his decision to abdicate in a worldwide radio broadcast. He said, "I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love."Edward VIII was King of the United Kingdom from 20 January 1936 until his abdication.
