Ball was Special Assistant to the Deputy Petroleum Administrator for War, 1944-1946; Director, Oil and Gas Division, Department of the Interior, 1947-1948; Petroleum Consultant, 1949-1954. His papers are housed at the Harry Truman Library.ON AUCTION is a rare 1940 first edition, with the even rarer dust jacket, This Fascinating Oil Business, by Max W. Ball, published by the Bobbs-Merrill Co., Indianapolis, 1940. The 8th printing. Illustrations by Jack Housez, maps by Sven W. Reims and C.G. Mundy. Particularly significant are the two endpaper and pastedown maps, one showing the locations of oil fields in the USA, the other one showing the all-important oil fields of the Middle East. So much had depended on these.Bound in red cloth with gilt titles, 420 pages, jacket showing some edge wear, encased in a mylar protector.Not common with a jacket.
