WONDERFUL 1940's MINIATURE SALESMAN SAMPLE PADDLES FROM ONE SOLID PIECE OF CEDAR.WITH A DECAL STENCIL OF THE "PETERBOROUGH CANOE CO., CANADA" ON ONE SIDE AND CLEAR ON THE OTHER.IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH MINOR RUBS AND NICKS TO VARNISH . THESE PADDLES CAME IN 12" AND 18" SIZES WITH THE 18" PADDLE BEING MORE RARE AND DIFFICULT TO FIND.From a "Peterborough" company collector - "The most common were the 12" ones which were typically given our as a promotional tool for those who took a test drive. They were not exclusive to potential buyers as others were given out at presentations and were often hand painted with personal messages. The 18" is more rare and more collectible for those looking for that hard to find one". He dated this paddle to the early 1940's.Peterborough Canoe CompanyThe Peterborough Canoe Company was formed in 1892 in Peterborough, Ontario. According to Ken Brown, author of The Canadian Canoe Company & the Early Peterborough Factories , the company was formed just weeks before the Ontario Canoe Company burned down in May 1892. Col. James Z. Rogers, formerly president, general manager and one-third owner of the Ontario Canoe Company owned 4% of the new company and became manager in 1893. The company continued to build the wide-board, cedar strip and cedar rib canoes much like the Ontario Canoe Company had before them. read more
