1943 MARKET STREET RAILWAY CABLE CAR DEFECT CARDS Up for consideration is a set of January 1943 Defect Cards from cable car #512. Defect Cards were used to note defects in the cars when turned in at the end of the service day, or turned over to another Gripman and Conductor. These are five cards for car #512 for the dates of January 11, 14, 18, 22 and 24. Evidently car 512 had a lot of wear and tear during this 2 week period: On the 11th, Conductor Murphy had the grip changed out by two mechanics (Grip #30 was pulled out and grip #16 went in). On the 14th, the grip was changed again as it was "over center" (out of alignment due to severe wear) (Grip #14 was pulled and grip #23 went in). On the 18th, Conductor Murphy again used his ticket punch to mark the card reporting "Cash register very slow". Nothing a good oiling couln't cure! On the 22nd, the car's pine wood track brake blocks were replaced. And finally on the 24th, the gong cord was frayed. These cars took a beating! Note Conductor Murphy used his ticket punch to mark the defect on most of his cards. Fine examples of San Francisco history from the late war years when the city was the hub of pacific war-time activities. As you may know, most, if not all of these cars are still running to this day on the Powell Street lines. They show appropriate wear for their age. See and read more
