1942 MONTANA Official State Highway Road Map Indian Reservations Battle Sites Handsome fold-out official highway map of Montana, printed more than 72 years ago. The map opens to 21" x 28" and has great coverage of old road alignments, with cartography by Rand McNally. Details include battle sites, historic landmarks, and proposed highways. The scans below show the map opened up and some of the detail: On the reverse side there are inset plans of Yellowstone National Park and Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park along with a list of Indian tribes and reservations. The map was published by the Montana State Highway Commission in 1942, and the artwork on the cover of this wartime road map shows a flag-draped goddess of Victory, standing tall with sword at the ready, above the slogan "Travel Strengthens America." Beneath threatening clouds of war, a cowboy drives his steers down the slope, while surveyors plot the terrain and cars whiz by on the road below.
