Original San Francisco Examiner press photograph. Date stamped: Dec. 1, 1942 Subject: Fighting General - Gen. Bernard L. montgomery of the British 8th Army leans against a tank somewhere in the Western Desert, unperturbed by exploding shells in the background. His troops have chased Rommel's forces through Libya. THE PHOTO HAS BEEN ALTERED (TORN AND TAPED) SO THAT THE EXPLOSION IS CLOSER TO THE GENERAL'S LEFT SHOULDER ( AP Wirephoto ).
