THREE ISSUES - SAIPAN BEACON, 1945Saipan Beacon. Saipan [Mariana Islands]: [US Navy] Island Command, 1945. Set of 3 issues, all from August 1945: Vol 3, # 4 (Aug 4) , Vol 3, #17 (Aug 21), and Vol 3 23(Aug 28). Published by the US Navy for the use of American troops. Tabloid newsprint paper, 9.5x14 inches, four pages. Some illustrations. Good condition overall, with dogeared corners, and some spotting in left hand margin area.These issues were published during August 1945, the last month before the War ended on September 2, so they chronicle the very last days before surrender. The issues discuss air raids on Japanese ships, Manila negotiations, Japanese surrendering in Manchuria, some mentions of the strikes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There is also coverage of more mundane items, like sports scores, leisure activities, and entertainment optionsSaipan is the largest of the Northern Mariana Islands, located in the Western Pacific.
