FIRSTANNUAL REPORT TO THE GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA BY THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS. January, 1948. Issued by State of California , Department of Public Works, Division of Highways. As 1948 began, with Earl Warren the Governor of California (he would run as Deweyâe(tm)s Vice President that fall), the great age of freeway construction in California was just beginning. To describe the progress in constructing and maintaining state highways from July 1, 1946 to June 30, 1947, the California Division of Highways issued this first in what would be a long series of annual reports. Its 155 pages, loaded with statistics on everything from vehicle registration to contract bids, also include several dozen black-and-white photographs of the equipment for highway construction, different phases of construction, and the happy resultsâe"new bridges freeways all across the state, carrying motorists on their newly improved journeys, with far greater projects in the offing. The book lacks the folding highway map that once sat in its rear pocket. I do have, however, the map from the next year (1949), which I am listing separately on eBay. This softcover book measures 6 by 9 inches, and is in good condition, with high-quality, coated-stock pages as white as when they were new.
