1948 Redware Miniature Bean Pot or Crock Brown Manganese Glaze By Russell Stahl For your Redware Collection Offered is a 1948 redware miniature bean pot or crock by Russell Stahl. This is different and beautiful pot with an incised band around the outside which has been colored with a light blue glaze. In addition the inside and the rolled lip of the pot is glazed with a dark chocolate manganese glaze. This beautiful crock is marked on the bottom as follows; Made By R R Stahl 1/12/48. This is probably one of the early pieces made by Russell Stahl, since he took over the Stahl Pottery in 1948. Stahl redware, a traditional Pennsylvania German style of pottery, was first produced by Charles Stahl from approximately 1850, until his death in 1896. Upon his death, his sons Thomas and Isaac took over the family business. The brothers continued making pottery until 1902, when the small family-run business found that it could not compete with mass-production pottery manufacturers. Sometime in 1934, while attending an auction, Isaac witnessed the sale of pottery his father had sold for 6 to 8 cents, selling between $2.50 and $6.50.
