Here is a vintage violin, bow and case that I just came across in a local estate. I don't pretend to know much at all about violins, so please look at the photos and ask any questions you may have. Here is what I can tell you about it:On the inside there is a paper label that says "Zotovil 1949, J.B. Herclik, Mistr Houslar, Mlada Boleslav, Opus 552, Model: J. Guaruerius" (I think that is what it says - see photos). It is about 23.5 inches long and seems to be in nice solid condition with no cracks that I can see EXCEPT on the end where the chin rest has been attached it looks like someone screwed it on a bit tightly and there is a crack right at that pressure point. I'm sure the case is not original to the violin, but it is solid and is serviceable and the clasps work fine (but with nicks, scuffs, and general wear on the outside of the case). The bow is about 29 inches long and has a maker's name of "Glasser" on it. I don't have a clue how to really play a violin, so I can't give you any sort of opinion on the tone/etc. I did, however, look up the maker's name on the internet and here's an article I found (I can't vouch for accuracy of the article, but just cut and pasted from the internet for what it may be worth to you):"Josef B. Herclik - Born 1895, died 1968. Son of violin maker František Herclík, a brother of violin maker Josef Bohumil Herclík. In the years 1909-1912 studied at his father in Staré Benátky and Mladá Boleslav (Cities in the Czech Republic 30-40 km north of Prague). Till 1913 worked at his fathers workshop, then in Kladno (10km north from Prague) with the violin maker Alois Bittner. In the year 1914 he went to Zürich to work in the J.E.Züst Company. In 1915 he went to the army where he worked as an army-violin maker - in Debrecen (Hungary) with the violin maker Gërzy Tenszer and later in Budapest with István Nagy. After the war he returned to his father's workshop. In the year 1920 his father bought him a villa in Kolín (50km east from Prague) where he settled and opened his own workshop fulfilling a promise to František Kmoch (Czech bandmaster and composer from Kolín (march music) - Heclík had promised him to settle in Kolín and to work there as a violinmaker). He taught the violin makers V.M. Vlková and Otakar Kotlá. His instruments are cleanly worked out. He worked after Stradivari and Guarneri.
