1950 The National Capital Sesquicentennial Official Commemorative Medal from the United States Mint You are bidding on a gem-quality, mint state example of this Official Commemorative medal, struck by the United States Mint in Philadelphia, to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the establishment of Washington, D.C. as the nation's capital in the year 1800. The medal, struck in high relief, is composed of copper, and is about the size of a US silver dollar. The obverse shows the "Statue of Freedom", which stands at the top of the Capitol Building's dome. The reverse depicts the scene where President John Adams addressed the member of the Sixth Congress on November 22, 1800, the day Washington, D.C. was selected to be the permanent capital of the nation. The medal is housed in the original box of issue, and includes the Certificate of Authenticity, which states: "This Medal was struck by authority of the Congress of the United States to commemorate the One Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the establishment of the seat of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia in the year 1800."
