RARE 1950's Ben Hur Sea Battle Movie Prop FigureUsed in The Sea Battle Romans Vs Macedonians Mini Ships - These Figures were used During the FilmingOf The Ben Hur Sea Battle November And December 1957 - The Figures were made by the MGM Modeling Department andThe size is just over 11 Inches Tall and made of a rubber foam material which has hardened due to age.These Figures Were sold at the 1970 David Weisz MGM Auction In Californiathe second image is of Arnold "Buddy" Gillespie standing in the miniatures tank ( circa 1959)The sea battle was one of the first sequences created for the film, filmed using miniatures in a huge tank on the back lot at the MGM Studios in Culver City, California,in November and December 1957. More than 40 miniature ships and two 175-foot (53 m) long Roman galleys, each of them seaworthy,were built for the live-action segment. The ships were constructed based on plans found in Italian museums for actual ancient Roman galleys.An artificial lake with equipment capable of generating sea-sized waves was built at the Cinecittà studios to accommodate the galleys.
