The beautiful 1950s Cubistic/Expressionist landscape you are about to bid on is a fabulous oil on canvas by the listed Dutch artist Hubertus (Ber) Johannes Mengels (1921-1995). The artist is known for his powerful depictions of places, people and things, infused with the bitterness of having worked in the coal mines from a young age... Perhaps his most wonderful quality is his ability to see beauty in things others would likely find mundane or even unattractive. He paints the ordinary with a love and understanding that transforms it into the sublime! Looking at the changing styles of his paintings, we see an artist as accomplished as Picasso, some paintings so thick with paint that he carves through the top layers, to cunningly reveal colors underneath. His work has evolved across many styles, but Cubism always remained present. Of all the art and artists I have had the priviledge of selling through the years, Mengels is by far my favorite! When looking at the whole body of his works we see that Mengels is truly a Cubistic Master! His works are hanging at the Hague Museum, and a book on his work has been published in 2004. This is an investment opportunity not to be passed on. This powerful scene is a fine example of his work... Bold, dividing the scene into areas of color, powerfully applying the paint, cutting through it with a palette knife like butter. These customary subjects are almost mundane, however transformed by the artist's touch, their relationship gains colossal, symbolic significance! The small houses, like lost jewelery boxes in the street, seem precious and obsolete among the dramatic colors of the Mengels' exquisite palette. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right. The image measures 20" x 24" and 22 1/2" x 26 1/2" in its original frame, that perfectly complements the piece, as always provided free of charge to our eBuyers.
