Rare late 1950s advertising sign for Trans Australia Airlines . This print, on heavy stiff cardboard backing, is the work of artist B. R. LINKLATER (Barrie Linklater), whose name is in the lower left corner of the sign. The central image of this sign is a Trans Australia Airlines plane - a Lockheed Electra Mk II. The lower left part of the sign has a bold inked inscription " TAA Electra Mk. II ". The plane has the TAA logo - a red kangaroo. The plane is flying over the site of the 1956 Melbourne summer Olympics, with the Melbourne Cricket Ground stadium in the lower right foreground, and other Olympic venues to the left. In the upper right background is the city of Melbourne.This sign measures 17 1/4 inches (43.8 cm) by 10 3/4 inches (27.3 cm). Some points on condition: there are small tack holes (from hanging) in the four corners, some light small brownish age spots, and edge wear. The back of the sign has the incomplete remnants of a cardboard piece - probably was used to fold out for standing the sign on a flat surface.The artist, B. R. Linklater, is a well-known artist who spent several years in the late 1950s in Australia. His works included advertising for Trans Australia Airlines, Avis rent-a-car, and Holden automobile.
