This film was purchased from Tosh's estate along with the metals and book and service records and all the uniforms that I have posted.The 442nd Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment of the United States Army and is the only infantry formation in the Army Reserve. The regiment is best known for its history as a fighting unit composed almost entirely of second-generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry who fought in World War II.Among them was Toshi Kuge, OSC pre-med student from 1936 to 1939, who was interned soon after Pearl Harbor and who enlisted in the Army in order to get out of the Thule Lake Detention Center, where many other Japanese-Americans were being sent. Toshi was a medical corpsman in the 442nd. He and fellow Oregon Stater Maseo Kinoshita, '41, would not only fight in Italy but would also become part of the invasion force in southern France and move north to fight in the Rhineland.Toshi Kuge received a battlefield commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the Medical Administration Corps for his work in setting up forward aid stations, usually within 100 yards of the front. He also received the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters, and his unit earned three Presidential Citations.
