Up for auction is an adorable 8" (actually 7 1/2") Hard Plastic NANCY ANN "MUFFIE" doll from 1955. She is a rather rare special version of Muffie dressed as "DAVY CROCKETT". She is marked on her back "STORY BOOK DOLLS CALIFORNIA MUFFIE." She is a fairly tightly strung doll and is in very good condition from what I can see. Due to the stiff condition of the Davy Crockett outfit, I had never removed the clothing from Muffie, until I took the photo. I only then removed the jacket so I do not know how the rest of her body and legs look. I was afraid to take the pants off since they looked like they were so stiff and conformed to the shape of her body. I can speculate they are fine, but it is just a judgement based on the condition of her arms, upper torso, and head which are all in great condition. She is a straight-legged walker and she does turn her head when she walks. Everything seems to work perfectly with her walking mechanism. She is a real sweetie and in very good condition for a 58 year old doll! I found her picture on page 145 of the book: "Small dolls of the 40's & 50's" by Carol J. Stover. She is wearing the same exact outfit as in the photo - a "two piece fringed suedecloth costume with brown leather belt and a brown fur cap, and brown vinyl side-snap shoes." Muffie, who has always been my favorite 8" doll, is so sweet looking and makes a darling Davy Crockett. What a great addition to your Muffie collection or 1950's doll collection!! Muffie's hair is original and is in a short, side parted bob- just like in the picture in the book. It is a pretty dark chestnut brown color and is very shiny and soft. Her hair looks like it is all there with no hair loss and no "homemade" haircuts. The wig is still glued tightly in all areas. The hair is clean and quite shiny. I don't know the material it is made of...Dynel maybe...or Saran?? Her pretty sleep eyes are a dark brown color. She has molded black eyelashes above each eye, in addition to 7 hand-painted brown eyelashes above each eye. Her medium brown eyebrows are still pretty true to original color with only slight fading. Her facial complexion is beautiful - fair but peachy in color with a slight sheen to it. There are no flaws on her face that I can see at all. No rubs, scratches, or marks. Her little red mouth has retained all of its bright red paint. Her head is tightly strung and does not bobble, although it can turn from side to side, and does so when she walks. From what I can see of Muffie's hard plastic body, arms, and legs they are also in very good condition. She has no stains, pen marks, cuts, splits, cracks, or scrapes that I can see. Her overall coloring is nice and peachy and uniform throughout her head, arms, and chest. Her arms are strung fairly tight......not super tight..... but tight enough to pose well. Her legs seem tightly strung and seem to work well. She can stand on her own well without the aid of a stand. Her pants are too tight on her for me to try to see if she can sit, but I presume she can sit fine. She has no bad odors and we are a smoke-free, pet-free home. Muffie comes dressed in her "Davey Crockett" original outfit - a light brown suede looking fringed, belted jacket with matching fringed pants. The outfit looks adorable on her but it has stiffened with age and it will be hard to take her clothes if you even want to. I have never taken off her pants and only took off her jacket today to photograph her chest and identifying marks on her back. The lower part of the sleeves of the shirt have some rips but the rest of the shirt looks fine. The pants look fine with only a little wear on the back of the right leg. No rips or cracks, though and no staining. The leather looking brown belt snaps in the back and is in great shape. Her "coon-skin" replica fur cap is cute and the fur is in good shape, but the "leather-like" backing has deteriorated some. The fur on the tail has worn thin also.
