Very interesting aerogram form franked with New Zealand Ross Dependency Antarctica 3d, 4d, 8d & 1/6 definitive stamp set (first day of issue for theses stamps) tied Scott Base/ Ross Dependency, Jan 11 1957 (first day of this post office), postmarks (month & day not too clear, but discernible using a glass), to Wellington NZ; (on reverse) return address of C. D. Lind-Mitchell, HMNZS PUTAKI, a New Zealand Navy frigate, which accompanied HMNZS ENDEAVOUR and HMNZS HAWEA which from Auckland NZ to establish the New Zealand Scott Base at Ross Island, Antarctica on Dec 21 1957. These three ships sailed to the edge of the pack ice near 60° South, where construction materials, supplies and mail was loaded on board the American icebreaker USS GLACIER, being better equipped to break through the pack ice, which sailed with the materiel to Ross Island, and then three aforementioned ships returned to New Zealand. From our research this cover appears to be unique, Jurisich A Postal History of Ross Dependency (New Zealand Antarctic) 1955-77 (2002) reports only one cover from this operation, being from HMNZS ENDEAVOUR, dated Jan 11 1957. Contains no message. Very rare early NZ Navy ship usage. Very fine condition.
