1958 Topps #62 Jim Brown PSA MINT 9. The Sporting News honored him with Rookie of the Year honors. Forty-five years later they declared him the greatest professional football player ever. The sixth overall pick for the 1957 draft might not have been the most elusive rusher who ever suited up in the NFL, but he was famous for being the toughest to bring to a halt. The Syracuse University star was the second leading rusher as a sophomore. A year later he averaged 5.2 yards per carry. Capping off his collegiate career was a unanimous first-team All-American selection and multiple school records. A all-around athlete, Brown played basketball, track, and lacrosse where he was also selected as a first-team All-American. His bone-rattling style earned him the NFL rushing title all but one of his nine seasons in the League, and his 1,863 rushing yards in 1963 remains a Cleveland Browns franchise record. He averaged an outrageous 5.2 yards per carry. His 1957 debut saw him leading all NFL running backs with 942 rushing yards. The first of eight years he would take that checkered flag during his nine-season career. His nine rushing TDs was likewise a League-topping figure for that freshman campaign.
