As I have mentioned in prior watch descriptions, I am in the process of liquidating my entire vintage watch collection and the latest is this red dial Rolex Oysterdate Precision from 1960. The Rolex Oyster originated in the late 1920's (1926 I think) and by post war times was fast becoming a true watch icon. Hours could be spent deliberating the reason for this iconic status, perhaps their timeless style (the Oysters of today ago are wholly similar to this example), their legendary reliability or even their unrivalled status. Who knows, most probably all these factors and many more to boot. But, the real point is, for all would-be collectors and enthusiasts, the Oysters provide a prestige, reliable watch that will probably never be ‘out of fashion’ and thus never prove a bad investment. This Oyster has a full size gent's stainless steel case (approx 33.5mm excluding lugs and signed winding crown) in good order. The all important signed winding crown moves through its three positions flawlessly and screws down tightly against the case. On removing the case back one can see the case reference of 6694 alongside the date markings for the first quarter of 1960. The case back is of course also fully signed Rolex. The red dial has been refinished with steel hour batons and the 12 hour is denoted by a large Rolex crown again in steel. read more
