1960'S JAPAN TIN BATTERY OPERATED ROBOT ASTRONAUT ASTRO COPTER & BOX SEE VIDEO!! Description This tin battery operated toy was made in Japan in the 1960's by Tomiyama. A Frankonia toy, it is a terrific tribute to the Mercury Space Program of the decade. It is a very large 14+ inches long. Modeled after the recovery helicopter used to pluck astronauts from the ocean after a splashdown. The toy has been gently played with - expects scuffs/nicks, and we noticed a missing tab on the small black cowling over the rotor shaft. The cowling remains tight and intact and we would not have even noticed it if we weren't cleaning every nook and cranny. No cracks in any plastic and no rust or dents - only one small crease in one of the tin rotors. The battery box is super clean. Although the helicopter tends to move in a short arc left to right rather than traveling forward, all functions work well - travels with a loud engine sound, stops, the door opens to reveal a tin waving astronaut! The action then repeats. Complete with flashing red engine lights from the top and rear exhaust. We think the lack of travel may be due to the wheels being slick (see photos) as when we gave it a nudge it moved forward well. The wheels are in excellent shape with no cracks or flat spots. This space toy does not come along often - the action is incredible read more
