This is a sensational 1960's HANDMADE NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN COILED PINE NEEDLE & RAFFIA CIRCULAR BASKET made by NORA ABBEY A KOASATI INDIAN BASKETMAKER (ALSO KNOWN AS COUSHATTA INDIANS) of LOUISIANA This particular Circular Coiled Pine Needle basket was handmade by NORA ABBEY a well-known KOASATI INDIAN BASKETMAKER who has handed down her craft to her daugther Marjorie Abbey Battise who was inducted into the Louisiana Folklife Center's Hall of Master Folk Artists in 1982 This Basket was made in a circular form and it is a Serving or Bowl Basket The Koasati are known for the Animal and Figural Baskets and their Pine Needle Baskets This basket measures approximately 10 1/2" inches in diameter and it is approximately 2" inches in height This Basket is made is a long-honored tradition of the Koasati or Coushatta Native American Indian people who make baskets from long Pine Needles gatd from Pine Trees and Raffia, River Cane and Pinecones. Traditionally, the men gatd the natural materials and the women were the basketmakers. Location: Koasati , An Upper Creek Indian Tribe speaking a dialect almost identical with Alibamu. read more
