Up for bid is a RARE and VINTAGE, 1962 TRANSCO Mandarin Chess Set. Recently rescued from a local auction, this wonderful set features large, well-detailed, gold and silver-finished figures ranging in height from 2-1/2 to 5/1/8 inches, with each sand-filled for stability and provided with a green, felt bottom. While the figures appear to be made of metal due to their luster, I believe that they are made of molded plastic, typical for early 60's-era mass production. Referring to the above photos, there are no missing or noticeably damaged figures that I was able to locate during inspection; the figures' finish, whether gold or silver, appears to have been "antiqued" by TRANSCO, and while there is some very slight wear on some figures and fading of color, it is far, far less that what one would expect to see for a 49 year-old chess set!!There is no formal storage box provided with this set; it was purchased with a pressed-wood board that has been thoroughly cleaned, and the ORIGINAL TRANSCO "Mandarin Chess Set" Instruction Booklet is also included (please see the above photo)!! They say that chess is a "game of war" fought between two evenly matched armies on a "miniature battlefield". Just looking at this set's "men", one could well believe that! This is a great find - don't miss your chance to bring it home!! While you're here, read more
