Thrifting find. Midcentury Folk Art Pacific Stoneware red and white striped cat, made in Oregon in the 1960s or 1970s. I understand it was intended for use as a wall hanging or mobile, indoor or outdoor. It is about 12" tall. Designed by ceramicist Florence Jean Ellsworth as part of Pacific Stoneware's "People Lover" line, launched in 1964. This whimsical cat is made of what looks like terra cotta clay, and is hand glazed on both sides with vivid red and white stripes, with green eyes. It is made from two clay pieces, each about 3/4" thick, vertically strung together with a leather cord that is looped and knotted at the top. A round bead separates the head from the body, and a second bead with red raffia and another knot holds the body in place and might also serve as a stylized tail. The piece has an impressed mark along the side of the body that reads "Pacific Stoneware, Inc. USA," an oval plastic sticker, as well as impressed numbers that are smeared and illegible. The side of the cat's head bears the impressed number 26. There is some crazing in the glazed areas. Overall, the cat appears to be in great shape, with no chips, cracks, or issues that I could find. The yellow leather cord seems strong and undamaged. There are glaze and clay imperfections that I think are appropriate for the folk art styling of this piece. Please see read more
